Why Campagnoli? Unlike studies like Kayser or Kreutzer, Campagnoli’s Caprices are special in that they are some of the earliest etudes originally written for viola. They are wonderfully musical, with numerous technical challenges to help you grow in all aspects of your playing.
Over the course of the Challenge, I’ll show you my step-by-step approach to break down technical and musical roadblocks quickly and efficiently, then put the pieces back together in time to make a convincing performance.
Along the way, you’ll learn techniques to make more efficient and effective use of your time in the practice room, so you’re confident you’re using every minute well.
We’ll use the Caprice to cover additional topics including:
Developing a beautiful sound with a balanced and fluid bow arm.
Using efficient movement patterns and releasing unneeded tension to play with more ease.
Playing with more expression using a simple technique I call “The 4 Variables” (yes, I think there are 4!)
Sound good?

FAQ
I can’t attend the live Zoom events, can I still participate?
Yes! Register for the event and you’ll get access to recordings of the workshops as well as PDF’s of the materials shared.
Can I join Mid-Challenge?
Sure! If you register you can follow along on your own schedule, or even complete the challenge at a later date.
I’m a beginning violist, is this too advanced for me?
During the challenge I’ll demonstrate ways to simplify parts of the Caprice so you can adapt it to your level. Violists that can play at least at the level of the Telemann Viola Concerto will find the most benefit from this Challenge.
I’m a violinist, can I participate?
If you’ve got a viola, sure 😀! This Caprice is specifically written for viola, so it’s important you can read alto clef, as I won’t be provided a transcribed version.
